Letter to Mark Shenton, Chair, Drama Section of the Critics' Circle

from Yun-Cheol Kim, President, IATC

12/11/13

Dear Mark,

I write to you on behalf of the International Association of Theatre Critics, as we approach the end of 2013, the 100th anniversary year of Great Britain's Critics' Circle, the oldest critics' organisation in the world. I would like to congratulate the membership of the CC's Drama Section (which is, of course, the British section of IATC) and all other members of the Circle on this remarkable milestone.

I congratulate the Circle on an excellent year of events celebrating your centenary, and I note with excitement that the celebrations are not over yet, with the online book 100 Critical Moments (to which, I understand, 20 of our Drama Section colleagues will be contributing) set for publication in the New Year.

As you know, having been established in 1956, IATC is not quite as old as the British Circle. However, we are proud to have been bringing together professional theatre critics around the world for almost 60 years. We are proud, too, to have the Circle's Drama Section as a member of our organisation.

As you know, British colleagues have long played a distinguished and active role in IATC. Two past-presidents of our organisation - namely John Elsom and, my predecessor, Ian Herbert - came from the British Critics' Circle. Mark Brown - theatre critic for the Sunday Herald and Scottish critic for the Daily Telegraph - currently represents Great Britain on the IATC executive committee; he is also our adjunct-director of young critics' seminars and a member of the editorial board of the IATC webjournal Critical Stages. We are also pleased to have received three young critics from Britain at our seminars in recent years.

So, on behalf of IATC, the very warmest congratulations on your centenary. Here's to the next 100 years of the Critics' Circle and to the continuing and strong relationship between the Circle and IATC.

Yours sincerely,

Yun-Cheol Kim

President, International Association of Theatre Critics
