The critic, author and arts consultant Alison Cole is to be the next editor of The Art Newspaper, following the resignation of Javier Pes. She takes over on February 1.

A long-standing member of the Critics’ Circle and a stalwart of the Visual Arts and Architecture section, Ali writes criticism for The Independent and The Arts Desk, and is also a prolific non-fiction writer. He latest publication on Michelangelo was published by the Royal Academy in March 2017.

She is also a corporate communications consultant following a career which included being executive director at The Art Fund (where she edited Art Quarterly), the South Bank Centre and Arts Council England, where in partnership with the BBC she launched the digital arts channel Space. She is also a trustee of the Foundling Museum, an adviser to the Institute of the Imagination and learning advisor to Art UK.
