Timothy Ridout with the Music Section's Young Talent (Instrumentalist) Award backstage at Wigmore Hall, November 27th., 2021

Much delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic and resulting restrictions, the final one of the Music Section’s 2020 Awards for Young Talent was presented to violist Timothy Ridout onstage at The Wigmore Hall at a lunchtime concert on Saturday, November 27th 2021.

The concert featured Timothy as soloist and director (of the marvellous ensemble Sinfonia Cymru) in two works: the Telemann G major Concerto of c 1712, TWV51:G9, and Dobrinka Tabakova’s arrangement for viola and strings of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D821 of 1824. The programme was a cut-down version of a programme previously toured by Ridout and Sinfonia Cymru in South Wales earlier in the month.

Young Talent (instrumentalist) – citation by Charlotte Gardner

With his strikingly clear, rich and rounded tone and the maturity of his music-making, British violist Timothy Ridout has been on our radar for some time, but to say that his career rocketed during 2019 is an understatement. UK triumphs included enthusiastically received performances at venues such as Wigmore Hall, being announced as a 2019 BBC New Generation Artist and being awarded the 2019 Royal Philharmonic Society Allianz Instrumentalist Prize. His international profile was moving at a similar momentum. With 2020 having already brought further good news such as a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, we’re looking forward to watching what comes next.
