Maggie Smith holding the Dickens Goblet which was given to the Circle by Sir Seymour Hicks to be used on great occasions. Here she is holding it at a lunch in the National Liberal Club at which the Circle presented her with its annual Award for Services to the Arts in Britain.

The annual award is voted for by the entire membership of the Circle from nominees proposed by each of the six sections. Maggie Smith was proposed by the Drama section, hence this tribute to the lady. Like all actresses she has a most expressive face. Here she is listening to the speeches in praise of her career – pensive, quizzical, sad, and delighted.
